The National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted a panel discussion under the theme of expectations and prospects for the OHCHR Seoul Office on 26 June, 2015.

The OHCHR opened the Seoul Office pursuant to the recommendations from the UN COI on North Korean Human Rights which recommended establishing a field based structure to support identifying responsibility of human rights violation in North Korea.

The Seoul Office is mandated with functions of the UN COI on North Korean Human Rights which was operated for a limited time of one year. The office will monitor human rights situation in North Korea, collect documents for identifying responsibility of human rights violations, and support activities of the Special Rapporteur on North Korean Human Rights. Not only Korea but the international community places great interest and expectation on activities of the Office.

The NHRCK discussed importance, function, and prospect of the Office during the panel discussion. The NHRCK hopes that the discussion served as an opportunity to pay constant attention to North Korean human rights issues.

Chairperson Hyun Byung-chul of the NHRCK gave opening remarks at the discussion and a number of members of the National Assembly also participated to give opening and congratulatory remarks.
