The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Hyun Byung-chul) had a starting ceremony of the 7th Monitoring Group on Human Rights of Older Persons on 12 May at Human Rights Education Center in Chungju. The Monitoring group, composed of older persons, will monitor and protect human rights of older persons.

The NHRCK appointed 71 older persons as member of the 7th monitoring group on human rights of older persons, and they will cover 5 areas including the Seoul metropolitan region, Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, and Daejeon.

The Monitoring Group will receive basic education necessary to their activities and then monitor the Support Program for Social Activities of Older Persons for 4 months until September.

The NHRCK believes that with rapid population ageing and increasing importance of life after retirement, encouraging older person to participate to the society will resolve economic issues of older persons and help them enjoy life with dignity through maintaining happiness and self-esteem. Therefore, the NHRCK would like to contribute to foster participation of older persons to social activities by reviewing related practical difficulties or problems.

The NHRCK has been supporting activities of the monitoring group starting from 2009 to enhance older person’s role in promotion of human rights of older persons and establish practical policy recommendations. The monitoring group checked on care facilities for older persons, housing of older persons in difficulties, and age discrimination in employment, and proposed policy measures to address such issues.

The NHRCK plans to reflect result of activities of the 7th batch of the monitoring group in devising policy measures for promotion of human rights of older persons.
