NHRCK Discusses Capacity-building Measures for Asia-Pacific NHRIs

NHRCK calls for greater international cooperation on climate change, digitalization and human rights and protection of human rights advocates

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) attended the meeting of the Tripartite Partnership, which was held in New York on 23-24 May 2024, on behalf of NHRIs of the Asia-Pacific region as Chair of the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions.

In 2011, the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) formed a tripartite partnership to support NHRIs across the globe.

At this year’s meeting, participants focused on digitalization and human rights, climate change and human rights and at-risk human rights advocates and NHRIs and identified solutions to these common challenges.

Chairperson Song gave an overview of investigation, research, networking and other activities undertaken by the NHRIs in the Asia-Pacific region even in the midst of various challenges and called for greater cooperation with other regional NHRI networks and UN entities including OHCHR.

Participants agreed on the importance of capacity building of individual NHRIs and cooperation between peers for the protection and promotion of human rights.

Chairperson Song presented the outcome of capacity assessments that the APF has implemented for NHRIs in Turkmenistan, Nepal and Kazakhstan and stressed the importance of acting on the recommendations that result from capacity assessments to contribute to meaningful improvements in their capacity.

NHRIs participating in the meeting pledged to collaborate to officially guarantee their right to participate in the SDG16 High-level Conference and the Summit of the Future this year for the application of a human rights-based approach to the process. They also reaffirmed their commitment to straightening their cooperation to put human rights at the center of all activities of the United Nations.

The NHRCK, serving in the capacity as Chair of the APF, will continue to cooperate with the international community for capacity-building of NHRIs within the region to shape a better future for them.
