NHRCK Launched 2006 Research Project on Human Rights Conditions

National Human Rights Commission of Korea(NHRCK) commissioned various research projects to inspect current conditions of human rights violations. Major areas that are subject to inspection for 2006 include beatings in school athletic clubs, mental health administration of local governments, internship conditions of vocational high school students, and human rights conditions of the children of international marriages, military misfits and senior citizens.
The purpose of this research is to fully understand the current status of various human rights issues in the country. The research will be commissioned to external research institutions and relevant professional experts. NHRCK will make recommendations on a variety of legislations and policies based on the result. Major issues selected by the Commission are as follow:
Issue 1: Beatings in school athletic clubs (focusing on elementary schools)
Issue 2: Mental health administration of local governments
Issue 3: Human rights conditions of the children of international marriages
Issue 4: Internship conditions of vocational high school students
Issue 5: Living conditions of the people who are deleted from resident registration records
Issue 6: Social discrimination against senior citizens
Issue 7: Regulations in middle and high schools
Issue 8: Current situation of military misfits
In addition, NHRCK will launch more inspections on the discrimination against female public workers regarding job placement and promotion, the human rights violations of mentally disabled in local communities, current conditions and causes of violations of the right to labor of special laborers, social discrimination against released convicts, living conditions of the severely disabled, examples of other countries on how to set up a guideline to identify discrimination, living conditions of those below poverty line, human rights conditions of abused children, and best practices of human rights education in other countries (centering on journalists, entrepreneurs and government social workers).
