The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) held a ceremony on December 8, 2006 to mark the 58th Anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The ceremony, marked by an air of celebration and excitement, took place in the International Conference Hall in the annex building of the Government Complex. Over 250 people attended the ceremony including Prime Minister Myung-Sook Han and other governmental officials as well as representatives of human rights organizations. During the ceremony, " The Republic of Korea Human Rights Awards" were awarded to individuals, groups and civil servants who had served as human rights watchdogs in every facet of Korean society. What is noteworthy about the 2006 ceremony was that the prizes" status was upgraded from commission-level honors to that of governmental orders, decorations and medals for the first time since the NHRCK" s inception. Ms. Ki-Ran Im, a former chairwoman of the Standing Committee of Minkahyup (Council of Family Movement to Realize Democracy) and Mr. Byeong-Eun Gwak, the head of Medical Care at the Wonju Correctional Institution, were awarded chairpersonial decorations of the Korean government while 15 other awardees including groups and individuals were honored by the chairperson of the NHRCK for their efforts to advance human rights.
The ceremony served as a memorable opportunity to commemorate the anniversary of the UN declaration: 15 children from the Seoul drop-in center " Ongdalsaem" recited the entire Universal Declaration of Human Rights to remind the attendees of its meaning. The ceremony grew even more inspiring and animated as Mr. Je-Deok Jeon, who is visually impaired, played the harmonica, and " Urinara" , a group of vocalists, delivered a special celebratory performance.
