Pursuant to the NHRCK" s recommendation, the two major airlines in Korea, the Asiana and Korean Airlines announced their plan to remove the current age limit on recruiting female flight attendants. Asiana Airlines removed the age limit for both domestic and international female flight attendants starting from the recruitment advertisement issued on January 19, 2007 while Korean Airlines informed the NHRCK of its plan to remove the age limit for female flight attendants starting from the recruitment for the first half of 2007.

The NHRCK recommended on September, 2006 that Asiana and Korean Airlines" upper age limit for the recruitment of female flight attendants be removed and that the recruitment policies and practices be improved. Korean Airlines had an upper age limit of 23 years old for two or three year college graduates and 25 years old for 4 year university graduates. Asiana Airline had an upper age limit of 24 years old for college or university graduates for domestic flight attendants and 24 years old for university graduates for international flight attendants.

The NHRCK disagreed with the airlines" argument that those who are more than 26 years old possess the common characteristics of lacking the skill and knowledge to efficiently carry out the duties assigned to them owing to their age and that under the current recruitment system it was difficult to assess individually whether such characteristics existed for the age group. Furthermore, having an upper age limit in recruitment does not coincide with the bona fide occupational qualification relating to age established in other countries such as the interrelationship between the age and core job duties, cost of training and time, reasonable time until retirement, job related training experience or career, excessive burden in providing reasonable accommodation, etc.

The NHRCK welcomes the decision of the two airlines to accept its recommendation and remove the unreasonable age discrimination in recruitment. It means a positive step forward for other private companies to follow in removing discriminatory practices in recruitment and employment.
