Jae-Geun Chung Appointed as Human Rights Commissioner

On February 8, 2007, Jae-Geun Chung (Buddhist Priest Bobahn, 47) was appointed as a commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK).


The new commissioner entered the Buddhist priesthood at Beomeoh Temple, Busan in 1979. He is currently the head priest of Geumseon Temple on Bukhan Mountain, which belongs to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. His major career positions are as follows: secretary general of the National Priest Association for Creation of Pure Buddhist Land (1989~1992); member of the steering committee of the Religious People" s Council for National Reconciliation and Reunification (1992~present); member of the steering committee of the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (1994~present); member of the central council of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism (1996~2002); non-standing member of the Ombudsman of Korea (2000~2006); member of the Ministry of National Defense Committee for the Review of Recent History to Establish Truth (2006~present); and standing member of the Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification (2005~present).
