Jointly with the British Embassy in Korea and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) hosted an international workshop for creation of a human rights-friendly environment in schools nationwide" in three areas (Seoul Metropolitan Area, Busan and Gyeongsang Province, and Gwangju and Jeolla Province) on February 22 26. British human rights experts, Professor Hugh Starkey (University of London) and Professor Audrey Osler (University of Leeds) were invited.
Professor Starkey and Professor Osler are currently serving as professional human rights education advisors to the European Parliament and UNESCO respectively . They have engaged in numerous human rights workshops, training programs, and consulting activities around the globe. In the latest workshop, they won the sympathy of participants by introducing the UK experience in its endeavor to redress such problems as the test-driven school environment and bloated curriculums and to ultimately create a culture where the human rights of both students and teachers are respected in an institutional environment similar to that of Korea.
In the first part of the workshop, Professor Osler provided an insight into the UK effort to create a human rights-friendly educational environment and its human rights education practices. In the second part, teachers, parents, and students made presentations on the status of human rights at schools and on relevant subjects from their own perspectives. In the third part, Professor Sun-Won Kang at Hanshin University announced his opinions on the roles of teachers, parents, and students in fostering a human rights-friendly school environment.
The international workshop was successfully conducted with more than 600 persons in attendance including teachers at all school levels, experts on human rights education, and invitees from the UK.
