Commission and Yeungnam University Execute an Agreement to Jointly Promote Human Rights

On April 27, 2007, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) and Yeungnam University (Chairperson Dong-Gi Woo) concluded a " memorandum of understanding for the development of human rights education and research" at Yeungnam University, agreeing to step up mutual cooperation for the promotion of human rights in local communities henceforth.
In light of expansion of human rights education and research in universities, the two organizations forged a consensus that they must improve human rights conditions in local communities. They also agreed to make a concerted effort for Yeungnam University" s establishment of a human rights education and research center, which will play a pivotal role in promoting human rights in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province.
The agreement basically provides for (i) the role of the university as an institution driven by human rights education and research; (ii) cooperation in human rights education including opening of human rights education courses; (iii) cooperation for human rights research in the region; (iv) mutual exchange of human rights materials; and (v) personnel exchange between members of the two organizations.
In December 2006, the NHRCK signed an MOU with Chonnam National University in the Gwangju-South Jeolla Province region. Because an MOU was also concluded with Yeungnam University in the Daegu-North Gyeongsang Province region, the NHRCK can now provide support for human rights education and research in other regions of the country in addition to the Seoul metropolitan area. Universities will serve as " repositories of human and material resources and values for human rights education" both in name and reality as they, with said universities at the center, will play an important role in establishing human rights in local communities, developing diverse human rights educational programs, and fostering professional human resources.
