-Forum streamed live on NHRCK’s YouTube channel-

On July 7 2021, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted the 19th National Human Rights Education Forum on the theme of incorporating human rights as a key component of the 2022 new school curriculum.

The Commission conducted a study last year about how to promote systematic human rights education and implement new curriculums at primary and secondary schools.

At the forum, participants recognized the importance of incorporating human rights perspectives across school curriculums and discussed ways to promote systematic human rights education at schools.

The forum opened with a thematic presentation by Professor Jeong-hwa Goo of Gyeongin National University of Education on introduction of systematic human rights education through curriculum revision. The presentation covered the key elements of human rights education which is to be introduced at primary and secondary schools and how to implement human rights education on the ground.

The presentation was followed by thematic discussions as to why human rights should be included in school curriculums and voices from the ground regarding the introduction of human rights subjects. The discussion was participated by elementary and middle school teachers, college of education students and administrators from education offices.

The forum provided an opportunity for teachers to build practical knowledge as to how to teach human rights subjects on the ground and for various stakeholders to share their views about how to incorporate human rights perspectives across school curriculums. The outcome of this forum will be used to devise policies for the implementation of the 2022 school curriculum.
