O Chairperson Lee Sung-Ho of NHRCK attended the 9th session of OEWGA held in New York.

o In his capacity as Chair of the Working Group on Ageing of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, Chairperson Lee attended meeting to review the rights to autonomy and independence of older persons, identify services regarding long term and palliative care and discuss measure for international cooperation.

o At the meeting, Chairperson Lee stated that even though the rights to autonomy and independence are recognized as the most essential rights, there is no clear standard or definition of those rights. He added that due to lack of legislation on provision of long term and palliative care, the responsibility to care lies solely on family members and thus there is a need for an international treaty on human rights of older persons.

o He also introduced the ASEM Global Ageing Center opened in June in Seoul, Korea, as asked for support and attention of the international community for the center to lead the international efforts for promotion of human rights of older persons.

o Chairperson Lee also chaired the side event co-hosted and sponsored by the governments of Argentina, Australia, Croatia and Republic of Korea under the theme of ‘Role of NHRIs for Promotion of Human Rights of Older Persons’ where representatives from government, NHRIs and CSOs participated.

o Meanwhile, prior to the UN OEWGA, Chairperson Lee visited Washington D.C. to visit the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Death Penalty Information Center to learn about human rights situation in the U.S. and Americas and discuss measures for cooperation.
