The National Human Rights Commission of Korea signed an MOU with Dongguk University in a bid to strengthen mutual cooperation for development of human rights education program and research at universities.
The main contents of MOU include support and cooperation for development of a university focusing on human rights education and research, cooperation for human rights including establishment of human rights education courses, cooperation with local community for human rights research, exchange of related material, and people to people exchange of the two institutions.
The NHRCK recognized activities carried out by Dongguk University including establishment of a human rights center and support center for students with disabilities as well as operation of human rights subjects. It agreed to continue cooperation for further development.
The NHRCK has been emphasizing importance of prevention of human rights infringement and promotion of human rights awareness through effective human rights education, focusing on the fact that universities provide pre-service to nurture experts before students go into society.
UN also emphasizes importance of human rights education at higher education institutions by recommending universities to strengthen human rights education at the Second World Program for human Rights Education(2010-2014).
The NHRCK, in a bid to facilitate human rights education at universities, strengthen research capacity and establish visions, has been signing an MOU with universities at 16 cities and provinces across the nation.
Starting with Jeonnam University in 2006, the NHRCK so far signed an MOU with 12 universities including Yeongnam, Inha, Hanyang, Korea, Ewha and Dongguk university and cooperated with them to establish human rights friendly campus culture.
The NHRCK will continue to cooperate with the universities so that they can spread human rights value on campus and continue carry out human rights education and research, thereby contribute to human rights improvement at local communities.
