The National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted a Conference on NAP of Business and Human Rights on 25 May, 2016 at Jeju International Convention Center.
The Conference was hosted as part of the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity. During the Conference, opinion from the government, public institutions, business, and civil society was received regarding the Recommendation on NAP of Business and Human Rights which aims to strengthen competitiveness of Korean companies on global stage and to facilitate implementation of human rights management in Korea.
In addition, presentations were made regarding international trend on business and human rights and progresses made in Korea.
The UN in 2011 announced the Guiding Principle on Business and Human Rights and recommended states to establish a NAP on Business and Human Rights to protect human rights in business management activities. In 2014, it proposed a guidance that includes definition of business and human rights NAP, progress and standards for establishment.
Chairperson Lee Sung-ho of the NHRCK emphasized in opening remarks that the NAP on business and human rights will help companies establish business management system that conforms to international standards and contribute to sustainable development and growth of businesses.
The NHRCK hopes that the conference served as an opportunity to formulate an NAP on business and human rights that present direction for human rights management and to facilitate productive discussion that results in creation of human rights friendly business culture.
