○ National Human Rights Commission of Korea published 2017 Annual Report that showed human rights situation in Korea amidst high expectation of the public with launching of the new government.
○ Annual Report consists of 2 Main Sections and Annex. Section 1 Introduction outlines domestic and international environment, and directions and achievements of duties. Section 2 Main Activities include improvement of related legislation, system and policy; investigation and remedy for human rights infringements and discrimination; human rights education and promotional activities; domestic and international cooperation; and activities of human rights offices. Annex includes statistics, data and pictures.
○ Main activities of NHRCK include establishment of the 5th Plan of Action for the Promotion of Human Rights, 10 tasks for the government and creation of Innovation Committee. Main recommendations include: recommendation to acknowledge the death in the line of duty of non-public officer in performing official duty; recommendation to improve policy to enhance human rights situation of migrant workers in construction business; recommendation to enhance registration system for people with disabilities to include refugee with disabilities; recommendation to enhance birth registration system to prevent child abuse; and recommendation to enhance protective system for the elderly with dementia.
○ Chairperson Lee emphasized in Foreword that the year 2017 was the year of a successful, nonviolent people’s revolution unprecedented in history. He added that this report faithfully documents Commission’s activities during this most dynamic year and guides the Commission as it further extends the reach of human rights program.
○Building up on such achievements, NHRCK will continue to make its utmost efforts to create an world where everyone is equally respected
○ Pursuant to the National Human Rights Commission Act, Annual Report will be presented to the President and National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. Both Korean and English versions of the Annual Report are available at NHRCK’s official website(nhrc.go.kr).
