NHRCK hosted 2017 Child Human Rights Congress

o National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted 2017 Child Human Rights Congress where major issues and tasks with regard to human rights of children were discussed.

 

o The congress was held under six specific themes including the law on human rights of child/juvenile, labor right of child/juvenile, right to vote of child/juvenile, criminal justice and child/juvenile, child negligence and emotional abuse, and right to play of child, and 60 people including experts in each area attended the congress.

 

o During the first day, the act on human rights of child and juvenile was discussed in order to understand and their human rights and identify measures to guarantee their human rights. In addition, the monitoring result by NHRCK regarding the right to labor of child was presented. Moreover, human rights situation of child in Korea was reviewed including expansion of indirect employment, increasing working period of juvenile and on-job training in public education.

 

o On the next day, child/juvenile and criminal justice was discussed, and international standards for child human rights including recommendations from the UN Committee on the Rights of Children and measures to implement those recommendations were presented. In addition, the meaning of and implementation measures for the right to vote of child, standards of child neglect and emotional abuse, and right to play of child were discussed.

 

o NHRCK hopes that the congress served as an opportunity to review human rights situation of child in Korea and to seek practical measures to guarantee human rights of child.
