Opening of Gangwon Human Rights Office

o National Human Rights Commission of Korea established Gangwon Human Rights Office to promote and protect human rights of people in Gangwon Area. The office initiated its work on June 1 and will have opening ceremony on June 14.
o The Gangwon Human Rights Office will carry out the following duties: receives requests for counseling and complaint regarding human rights infringements and discrimination; conducts preliminary investigation and provides remedy for urgent human rights infringements and discrimination; investigates and provides remedy for cases taking place in local governing bodies, schools, detention facilities and mental health facilities and carries out activities for cooperation with civil society organizations and related institutions and for human rights education.
o NHRCK expects that establishment of the office will help the local residents to receive remedy in an efficient manner and enable NHRCK to handle urgent human rights issues immediately.
O Meanwhile, NHRCK opened regional offices in Busan and Gwangju in 2005, in Daegu in 2007 and in Daejeon in 2014.
o NHRCK will make its best efforts to support operation of the Gangwon office to effectively handle human rights issues in the area.
