NHRCK Participates in Meeting of GANHRI Working Group on Ageing

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(NHRCK) participated in the meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions’(GANHRI) Working Group on Ageing. The GANHRI is a global network of national human rights institutions representing more than 110 NHRIs and has created several working groups on specific human rights including the Working Group on Ageing. The current members of the GANHRI Working Group on Ageing are Korea, Poland, Georgia, Nigeria Kenya, El Salvador and Bolivia and Korea serves as Chair of the Working Group.

 

At the meeting held on June 2, NHRCK Chairperson Young-ae Choi delivered opening remarks and presented the activities that the Commission has conducted over the past year to protect and promote the rights of older persons during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other members also shared their activities relating to the rights of older persons over the same period.

 

The members discussed the outcomes of the recent 11th session of the United Nations Open-ended Working Group on Ageing, which was established with the aim to finalize an international instrument dedicated to the human rights of older persons, and the role that NHRIs can play in accelerating the preparation of a draft instrument.
