Australian Ambassador Pays Courtesy Call on NHRCK Chairperson

On May 21, Australian Ambassador Catherine Raper paid a courtesy visit to Chairperson Young-ae Choi at the head office of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea.

The two sides discussed various human rights issues dealt with by the Commission, from the death penalty to women’s rights. Ambassador Raper said that as the first female Australian ambassador to Korea, she is keen to contribute to advancing women’s rights in Korea. Chairperson Choi describes the rising conflicts between women and men in Korea and the importance of striking a delicate balance between protecting women’s rights and preventing reverse discrimination that some men say they are suffering from as a result of policies favoring women.

Addressing the ambassador’s question about the progress in the abolition of the death penalty in Korea, Chairperson Choi reiterated the Commission’s support for the end of capital punishment and welcomed the government’s vote in favor of the United Nations resolution on a moratorium on executions last year.

The Chairperson invited the ambassador to the upcoming conference on equality law, which will be organized by the Commission and scheduled for June 11. Ambassador Caper responded that Australia is happy to take part in the event and share its experiences of combating discrimination and embracing diversity.
