o National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted the 2017 International Symposium on North Korean Human Rights at Central Hall Westminster in London on 18 of May.

o The Symposium was held under three themes: role of information inflows and outflows for North Korea; children’s rights in North Korea with a focus on the UN human rights protection mechanisms; and strategies for accountability for crimes against humanity. Panels of the symposium included Commissioner Han Wee-soo of NHRCK, and Senator Julie Smith and Caroline Cox, and 100 people attended the symposium.

o. The symposium was co-hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, All Parliamentary Group on North Korea, and European Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea and broadcasted live through Facebook(facebook.com/EAHRNK).

o Chairperson Lee Sung-Ho of NHRCK stated in his opening remarks that North Korean people are faced with dire human rights situation and situation is worse for the vulnerable including women, children and people with disabilities. He added that it is unfortunate that the North Korean regime denies accepting request from the international community to enhance human rights condition in North Korea. However, he also stated that the fact that North Korea accepted visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of People with Disabilities into North Korea shows that it started to respond to the request of international community, and there is a need to make continuous efforts to raise awareness and reach agreement on this issue internationally to enhance human rights of North Korean people.

o Senator Julie Smith mentioned in her keynote speech that the practice and principle of international community are not applied in North Korea and emphasized that we need to pay more attention to human rights issues in North Korea as well and not just to the nuclear issue. She also added that the not only the EU and western world but also China has to put pressure on North Korea regarding human rights issues.

o National Human Rights Commission of Korea has been hosting international symposium on North Korean human rights every year since 2004 in order to raise awareness on the graveness of North Korean human rights issues and discuss measures to enhance human rights in North Korea. The NHRCK will continue to make efforts in this regard including strengthening cooperation with international community.
