National Human Rights Commission of Korea Hosted First Biannual Meeting of GANHRI Working Group on Ageing
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) hosted the first biannual meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Working Group on Ageing and the Rights of Older Persons (HROP) on June 28.
The meeting was held online and was attended by 20 participants, including HROP member institutions and other NHRIs, as well as experts in the field of human rights of older persons.
The participants were briefed on the 13th UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing, reviewed how UN Member States are actively working in this field, and discussed the role of NHRIs in response.
The NHRCK presented a strategy to encourage other NHRIs to advocate for the Convention on the Rights of Older Persons, and proposed a survey to define the strategy.
The participants agreed that there is a gap in the current international human rights system with regard to the protection of the rights of older persons, and agreed that the concerted efforts of NHRIs are needed for the establishment of the new legally binding convention.
