National Human Rights Commission of Korea chairs APF Governance Committee and Regional Network Meeting
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), Chairperson Doohwan Song, hosted the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF) Governance Committee and Regional Network Meeting on 13-14 March 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The APF Governance Committee on 13 March, chaired by Song (APF Chair), was attended by Khunan Jargalsaikhan, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Mongolia(APF Vice-Chair), and Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of India (APF Governance Member). Governance Committee members discussed on key issues related to the operation of the APF.
Prior to the Regional Network Meeting, members of the Governance Committee reviewed current human rights issues in the Asia-Pacific region, explored regional cooperation in addressing human rights issues, and reviewed the work of the APF Secretariat to discuss ways to strengthen the capacity and support the work of National Human Rights Institutions(NHRIs) in the region.
The discussions at the Governance Committee were shared with members at a Asia-Pacific Regional Network Meeting the following day, where participants developed a collective voice to take to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Bureau Meeting and Annual Meeting on 14-16 March. During the Regional Network Meeting, more than 20 NHRIs from the Asia-Pacific region reviewed the proposed amendments of the GANHRI Statutes to strengthen the accreditation process for the NHRIs and the Five-Year Strategic Plan, which will be a major topic of discussion at the GANHRI meetings, and explored ways for the NHRIs to work together.
Chairperson Song actively sought the views of member institutions during the two-day meeting to strengthen cooperation among APF members.
