NHRCK holds the GANHRI 

Open-Ended Working Group on Aging Session

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Doohwan Song, hereinafter the ‘NHRCK’ or the ‘Commission’) held the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions(GANHRI) Open-Ended Working Group on Aging Session at the Headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights(OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland on 23 June 2022.

 

The 30 participants of the session included the representatives from 9 member institutions of the working group including the Human Rights Commission of Poland, the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights of older persons, officials from the OHCHR, Human Rights Watch and experts of the rights of older persons. The participants discussed on preparing a draft of a new convention on the rights of older persons and the future plans.

 

At the Working Group Session, the participants analyzed the reasons for scarce achievements in terms of adopting the ‘Convention on the Rights of Older Persons’, despite the 10 years of efforts made to have the convention. The limitation in the international human rights mechanisms was also discussed. The participants at the meeting vowed to continue working towards adopting the convention on the rights of older persons, encourage the states to support the convention and actively participate in raising social awareness on the issue.

 

“The 12th Session of the UN Open-Ended Working Group on Aging was a huge step forward in drafting a new convention on the rights of older persons, ” said Chairperson Song, the Chair of the GANHRI Open-Ended Working Group on Aging. “All National Human Rights Institutions have to actively participate in adopting the convention for older persons’ rights,” emphasized Chairperson Song.

 

Prior to the GANHRI Open-Ended Working Group on Aging Session, Chairperson Song met with Nada Al-Nashif, the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights and discussed the human rights in Korea. Chairperson Song and the Deputy High Commissioner Al-Nashif touched on various issues including the necessity to legislate the Equality Act, the establishment of the Human Rights Protector for Military posititon within the NHRCK, promotion of older persons’ rights, issues regarding genders and policies and raising awareness on human rights through education. The Chairperson and the Deputy High Commissioner also discussed on the future plan to coordinate further to promote human rights in Korea.

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea will continue to make efforts to take leading role in adopting the convention on the rights of older persons through participating in key international meetings, including the Human Rights Council.
