NHRCK Chairperson visits the Center for

Migrants and Refugees

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea Chairperson Doohwan Song visited *the Naomi Center for Migrants and Refugees(located in Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province) to meet with the migrants and refugees and the staff at the Center to hear the voices on the ground.

The Naomi Center is an institution which has been conducting activities and providing assistance to the humanitarian asylum seekers, migrants and refugees in Korea, including medical and housing support, job seeking assistance, contents for the refugee families and study groups.

Chairperson Song attentively listened to the current state of the rights of the migrants and refugees and the issues that require attention.

Regarding the issues involving refugees, the Commission launched an inquiry to identify the challenges faced by the humanitarian asylum seekers in Korea. The Commission found that most of the Yemeni asylum seekers residing in Jeju since 2018 who have submitted the application to gain refugee status in Korea are still not recognized as refugees(412 people out of 500 applicants) and around 2,400 humanitarian asylum seekers nationwide are met with various difficulties due their unstable status in Korea. The Commission, therefore, has recommended improving the policies in order to adapt to the needs of the humanitarian asylum seekers in Korea in June 2021.

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea will continue to make efforts to ensure the rights of the migrants and refugees.

*The Naomi Center: The center first started out as the ‘Migrant Pastoral Committee’ under the Catholic Diocese of Jeju in 2004 to provide support to foreigners, including medical support. The Committee then established ‘Jeju Foreigners Shelter’ in 2007 and the name of the Shelter changed to the ‘Naomi Center’ in 2015.
