The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Young-ae Choi) released a statement on May 14 ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which is celebrated on May 17.

The Chairperson said in the statement that some local media emphasize the sexual and gender minority status of those infected with COVID-19 after visiting clubs in Itawon, Seoul, rather than focusing on case numbers or quarantine measures, which sparks an outpouring of criticism and hatred towards the LGBTI community. The Chairperson expressed concern that the reaction may cause LGBTI persons to avoid testing for fear of the disclosure of their identity or private information, hampering the efforts to contain the spread of virus.

Furthermore, the Chairperson urged the Korean society to combat hatred and discrimination against LGBTI persons during the COVID-19 pandemic and set a good example in this regard for the international community on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
