Young-ae Choi, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, said in an interview with Kyunghyang Shinmun on March 6 that “politicians should play a key role in tackling hate speech as they are responsible for making policy decisions and defending democratic values.” Chairperson Choi further stressed that the upcoming general election, in which 18-year-olds cast their vote for the first time, should be a crucial opportunity for us to curb discrimination in our society.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea released an opinion on hate speech in November 2019, calling on the Speaker of the National Assembly, political party leaders and the Chairperson of the National Election Commission to create rules to prevent and address hate speech by politicians and adopt voluntary self-regulation.
